Sorry about that. Strangely enough rebooting the linux box seems to have fixed the problem.
I think the problem was this: * I freshly installed linux. $CVSROOT was not set. * Then I booted the machine and defined and exported $CVSROOT in shell command line. * Also added 'export CVSROOT=/home/cvsroot' * Then I restarted xinetd. But somehow this exported variable was not recognised properly in system-wide manner. Only when I rebooted the variable was recognised. Anyway, the problem is fixed.
