Sorted it myself, issue 44 (http://ccvs.cvshome.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=44) in contains a patch for cvs to enable PAM authentication, I applied that, recompiled cvs and added a cvs entry to the pam.d directory telling cvs/pam to use the smb authentication and it all works fine!! (Apart from cvs wouldn't create a new .cvspass for some reason)
