Thanks, I figured this out.  It seems to be a problem (though infrequent 
enough that I couln't find the solution posted here).  But there is a bug in 
the OpenSSH implementation of ssh2 which prevents non-interactive ssh 
sessions from terminating properly.  Rather than try to fix ssh2 (apparently 
this has been a problem for at least 4 years...) I simply downloaded the 
latest version of ssh1 (OpenSSH_3.0.2p1) from openssh.org and it works 
without any problems whatsoever.

Bummer.

Hopefully someone will fix this for real someday!
