In my configuration there's main version in HEAD. I delete all branches
that have been merged to HEAD. In project Makefile there is target that
shows all tags (and branches):

        tlist:
                @cvs log -h Makefile |\
                        sed 's/:.*//g' |\
                        sed -n '/       /p' | sort

'make tlist' shows only open branches waiting for commit.
