I found this from an old post and wonder if it could be what is causing my problem?

[Footnote] There is one exception - for the 'diff' command, HEAD means "the most recent revision in the currently-checked-out branch".

If this is true than even though I am specifying HEAD to diff, it doesn't really mean HEAD ... but the most recent version on the same branch :(
