Thanks for the responses. I will go with the easy option of creating a separate historical cvs area that I will put the two earlier releases into followed by the release I started the 'live' cvs area with. That way I won't need to import the updates that the users have made but I will still be able to track back to the earlier releases from the starting point of the 'live' area.
