Please study and understand what the 'cvs edit', 'cvs watch' and 'cvs unedit' commands do, and what errors they will generate. They have nothing at all to do with the error Maik posted. In addition, if 'cvs watch' is on, then the correct thing for you to do is to issue a 'cvs edit' command, not to change the permissions manually. That is the whole point of these "side effects" you mentioned.
