Hi,
Thanks for the quick reply. We aren't using the .cvsrc file. The
CVS Server version is: 1.11.17 and the (Mac) Client is :MacCVS v3.2
(Blue Fish). I'm still not sure what is causing this?

You would not happen to be using "SmartCvs" would you?
7 Jul 2005 we had a report of it having problems with compression.

suggestion, check to see if either explicitly on the command line or in
your .cvsrc you are using "cvs -z#" where # is 0-9, if you are try turn
compression off and see if the command works correctly.

Also what version(s) of cvs are you using on the client and server?
on 30 Jun 2004 David Carson gave the same errors you had, using
Server:cvs 1.11.16 Client:cvs 1.11.1p1
