If you aren't going to read the manual, don't bother trying to use CVS. Whatever it is you want to do with version control will absolutely require reading the manual. Seriously, if you aren't willing to spend a half-hour trying to make secure login work, why would you expect anyone to spend a half-hour writing up instructions for you?
