If you are looking to establish a project-wide revision number via CVS, the answer is "no." CVS only handles file-level revision management. You have to have some other mechanism for determining the project version and then "tag" all your project files with the ouput of that mechanism. As far as I can see, this makes project versioning arbitrary. In fact, when you consider that Java went from Java 2 (aka Java 1.3, 1.4) to Java 5 (aka 1.5), you get a sense of just how arbitrary that scheme can be.
