Not that I'm one of the guru's, but hit this myself a while back and it was a pretty straightforward solution.
CVS doesn't 'talk' ssh natively, it was mostly an add-on and as far as I can tell all recent versions don't recognize nonstandard ports. But you're not out of luck--ssh is smart. edit ~/.ssh/config and add: Host [abbreviation] Hostname [x.com] User [myuserid] Port [myport] setenv CVS_RSH=ssh setenv CVS_ROOT=:ext:[abbreviation]:[repos] cvs ...you know the rest.
