It was a cleanly jumpstarted sparc box.

It looks like the expr/id stuff was failing but the message to look
in check.log was obscured by all the error output and I missed it.

Initially, make failed entirely with a clear warning about expr/id
but because it didn't complain when I put /usr/xpg4/bin at the
front of my path I thought those versions worked.

Thanks. That looks like the solution. coreutils (whose `make check'
also fails!) is allowing testing to proceed much further.

Still falls over if I have done `configure --disable-server',
instead of simply skipping those tests, but I can work around that.
