I tried both of the commands below, as you mentioned, in a project which hasn't 
had any activity for a long time, therefore, shouldn't have generated a report 
at all but to my amazement, it did!
 
cvs log -d"2008-05-01<2008-09-26"
 
I also realized that there shouldn't be any space between -d and its ARG, and 
the ARG should be in double quotes or CVS will complain.
