Interestingly, through no action on my (as admin) part, this problem seems to have resolved itself on May 31. According to my backup, on May 29 for my main inbox, user.brian, there were 13339 files on the disk but on May 31's backup there are only 4136.
IMAP has always reported in the neighborhood of the 4K messages. Strange. b.
