Friends,

Now is a crucial time for free software -- attacks such as digital
restrictions management, software patents, and well-funded FUD
threaten all of our freedoms. At the same time, awareness of the
importance of free software is growing in many areas, presenting us
with important opportunities.

In 2011, together the FSF and GNU will take on the next wave of
challenges to free software. We will be expanding our awareness
campaign for non-technical users, and encouraging free software users
from around the world to come together for the sake of freedom. We
will be building our campaigns to protect your freedom, like Defective
By Design and PlayOgg -- which now also promotes other free formats
like WebM. We will be expanding our resources to help free software
users, including our Free Software Directory, our Hardware Directory,
and our Free Software Jobs listing.

In March, we will be holding the third of our LibrePlanet conferences
in Boston, bringing the leaders of free software projects together
with the wider community for three days of discussion, activism and
learning. On the foundation of progress made at last year's
conference, we will again be emphasizing the need for a diverse free
software community, and working together on strategies to achieve
that. You can be a part of the year-round LibrePlanet community as
well as the planning for this year's event:

Like many organizations, we have suffered financially over the last
few years due to factors in the economy. We are asking all of our
supporters, associate members and donors to dig deep this year and
give as much as possible so we can continue to do strong work in our
key areas of GPL compliance, stewardship of the GNU Project, campaigns
activism and educational publishing.

Our FSF Bulletin continues to grow in both contributions and variety,
and we are sending more copies to more countries than ever before,
thanks to increased awareness of the GNU Project and our work.

Additionally, we are now sending our email update on FSF and the GNU
Project to over 35,000 people every month, and this number continues
to grow at an outstanding rate.
