Just for anyone googling thread sorts, mine is
(setq gnus-thread-sort-functions
'(gnus-thread-sort-by-number
(lambda (t1 t2) (not (gnus-thread-sort-by-date t1 t2)))))
Which has my preferred format of newer emails/posts at the top and
threads by date.
