So, I looked at a case where a message was marked O without me ever
seeing it.

The only reference to the article number in newsrc.eld (or in the
variable in memory) was to the article's score, which was correct
(+3000).

Can you explain more what you mean by comparing the newsrc.eld file to
the article numbers on the server?
