It might be a better idea to find out what restrictions they are placing at your work rather than try to figure out how gnus works. It is most likely that your work people use a firewall that blocks NNTP connections. Assuming they are not blocking SSH connections as well, there is a way to use your home machine as a gateway to get news. Configure an SSH connection to your home machine, tunnelling port 119 to port 119 on some news server reachable from your home machine. Then you can use "localhost" or "127.0.0.1" as the news server at work.
