I also have the same problems. If a connection is dropped while
performing some network activity, Gnus becomes totally unresponsive.

A single C-g doesn't do anything, but if you insist, eventually, you
return to a broken *Groups* buffer (nothing works basically). In the end
I always have to kill emacs and restart.

Since I'm on a flaky WiFi network, connection timeouts and hangs happen
very often, not just because of server issues.
