I do it like this:
(setq gnus-message-archive-group
'((if (message-news-p)
(concat "news-" (format-time-string "%Y"))
(concat "mail-" (format-time-string "%Y")))))
which creates yearly folders for news and mail, e.g. news-2016 and
mail-2016.
