It seems that I had to set 

  (setq mml-smime-signers '("MYKEY"))
  (setq mml-secure-smime-signers '("MYKEY")))
  (setq mml-secure-smime-sign-with-sender nil)

Why I have to do this now and not before is mysterious to me
