I published and patented some work around 1990(?) in Optical Engineering in
which we used standard video cameras to capture very high speed repetitive
events. We were working in the IR, but the principle was quite general. We
did some work in the visible, but we only had access to vidicons, and these
had too much lag to be useful.
Given the availability of high frame rate, short integration time cameras
today, I'm not sure our old solution is very attractive, but it worked and
could be implemented inexpensively.
