Several of you have requested a status report for the schools in the AEA that you serve. Attached is a full state report summarized by AEA. The report identifies the school districts in each AEA, the student information software that is used and the status of the school districts participation in Project EASIER. The status of school districts changes daily as more and more schools join the project, so in visiting with a district's staff their status might have changed by the time you read this email. I believe AEA 6 and AEA 16 are the only AEAs that have all school districts in the project or in the process of joining the project. All of the districts serving K-12 students in AEA 14 have joined the project, however, those serving K-6 or K-8 are on hold. All Iowa school districts are expected to be using Project EASIER and sending student data to the Department of Education electronically by July 2003. State law already exist for the Department of Education to request schools to submit student data to them in a form that is requested by the Department of Education. This legislative session the Department will be requesting legislation that gives the state authorization to maintain a statewide student database. This database will be needed as a part of the "No Child Left Behind" legislation that requires states to report various student data to the Federal Government. However, the state department has no plans of requiring a specific student information software system. Some explanation about the various statuses 1.. Enabled means that the EDI system has been tested in the district and they are capable of sending student data for up to seven BEDS reports to the Department. 2.. Some school districts are in the process of having site visits to become enabled. 3.. Quite a few school districts joined the project this fall. Most of them are attending curriculum worksheet workshops. There are three workshops left, October 3, November 7 and December 10. 4.. You may note that for schools that are in the process of school reorganization and currently serve only K-6 or K-8 students Project EASIER is waiting for the reorganizing to be complete. 5.. There are also some school districts that are "On Hold" These are school districts that requested to join the project and for some reason have been put on hold. Changing software, waiting for new hardware, etc. 6.. Power School has promised to develop an extract that Project EASIER can use. This software is to be ready in October. Some of those schools are waiting for the extract; some Power School districts have joined and have started getting data ready. 7.. You will also note that a few districts do not use an automated Student Information System. My guess is that these school districts will need to purchase an automated SIS. I have not seen anything official, but I would think that these districts will have to buy the system and will be probably get a waiver for a short time to implement the SIS. 8.. Four districts have joined the project, but have not completed the curriculum worksheet that is required before they can transmit data electronically. Workshops have been held and Project EASIER staff will visit districts having difficulty when assistance is requested.
