Introduction: My name is
George Tuttle, technology consultant for the Pocahontas Area School
District. When Scott and I put
together the agenda, I told him that I would send it out, since this month�s meeting is in
Pocahontas.
I would like to extend a personal invitation to everyone in AREA III to
attend this meeting. We are very
fortunate in the past in AREA V to have strong technical support provided by the
AEA. One of the focal points of
that support has been monthly tech coordinator meetings. We invite all from AREA III to sample
this support first hand. I realize
that it might involve being out of the classroom for a day, but I think you
would find the time well spent. Our
meetings are very casual and usually entertaining as well
instructional.

When I became the tech coordinator in 1991, it was a half time job
covering 4 buildings and 800+ students.
Because of the time restraints, I thought it was impossible to support 2
computer platforms, so we had to make a choice. Because our middle and high school was
heavily involved in exploratory and preparatory curriculum, we felt that the PC
side would best fit our needs. One
CCC lab with Macs is the extent of the Mac presence in our district. I mention this so that no one is
disappointed when they get here and find very little information about
Macs. Below is a list of what can
be seen in operation.
Elementary-FOLLET Library Management,
Accelerated Reader, WeatherBug from WHO-13, Student Writing Center, 20 computer
PC lab with many software options and color LaserJet printer, STAR assessment
for reading and math.
Middle School-FOLLET Library
management, Career Ed Workbook, automated embroidery machine, complete Office
2000 curriculum including PowerPoint, middle school writing curriculum using
computers and the Internet, web page design,color Laserjet printer.
Alternative School- Engraving shop
using laser and mechanical engraving.
High School- FOLLET Library management,
Win School with grade book, MOUS certification training, Art instruction using
CorelDraw, web page design using FrontPage, Video editing using CASABLANCA and
Vegas Video, computerized accounting, AUTOCAD, CNC lathe, CNC
mill, CAM using Mastercam, computer controlled plasma cutter, SHOPBOT computer
controlled 3 dimensional router,color Laserjet printer.
Administrative- Windows 2000 server network, 2
firewalls, SONICWALL PRO and ISASERVER hooked back to back, gateway scanning
system that scans all incoming and outgoing email and internet traffic, DANTZ
Retrospect backup software using USB 2.0 hard drives for backup storage, X-Stop
filtering software, Ghost and Imagecast for imaging machines and creating
redundancy, Imail email server, scripts for entering groups of users, COBALT
Cube used for web server, wireless 11 Mbit Ethernet connection between buildings
and between towns(Rolfe - Pocahontas), all faculty can print directly to copiers
rather than to printers.
