With the rash of new viruses out there I wanted to let everyone know of a new development. Some of the viruses are sending password protected zip files with the password in the body of the message. When a zip file is password protected the file also gets encrypted and virus scanners can not scan the content of the zip file.
I have has a few calls from people talking about viruses getting through the email virus scanner gateways. Password infected zip files will be able to bypass a virus scan. Because if this it is important that all your workstations have up to date virus software installed as well. With workstation AV the virus will be caught when/if the attachment is opened. Remind all your staff/students not to open any attachment unless they are expecting a file from someone. I would even suggest that the users get a verbal confirmation from the sender before opening any attachment.
