Subject: [iec-coop] Canon ZR Camcorder CCD Image Sensor Malfuntion

Some Canon ZR camcorders were sold with bad CCD chips, which fail within a couple of years.
I purchased one for my son and sent it in for repair. It wasn't covered under warranty but they fixed it for free.

Canon has started a free repair program to address the issue. Contact them directly if you have a
Canon ZR Camcorder with similar problems.

See below:

Thank you for contacting Canon product support.  We value you as a Canon
customer and appreciate the opportunity to assist you.  We are sorry to
hear that your ZR90 does not display an image.

It has recently come to our attention that the vendor-supplied CCD image
sensor used in this Canon digital camcorder may cause the following
malfunction: When the product is used in recording or playback mode the
LCD screen and/or electronic viewfinder may exhibit either a distorted
image or no image at all.  While reports of this malfunction have been
rare in the United States, we have determined that it may occur if the
product is exposed to hot and humid environments.

Based on the information you have provided, it seems that you may have
encountered this issue.  To determine if the CCD (image sensor) is
working properly, please follow these steps:

1.  Place a cassette tape with a known good recording on it into the
camcorder.
2.  Power the camcorder on into the Playback mode.
3.  Press play and observe the LCD.
  a.  If the video plays back properly, please proceed to step four.
  b.  If the video does not play back properly, please ensure that the
tape contains known good video.
  c.  If the tape contains known good video, please clean the
camcorder's heads with a dry head cleaning tape.  Once the head cleaning
is performed, play back the tape.  If the playback is normal, proceed to
step 4.  If the playback is distorted, the camcorder requires service.
4.  Set the camcorder to camera mode.
5.  Remove the lens cap.
6.  Point the camera at a well-lit scene and observe the LCD and/or
viewfinder.  If the scene the camcorder is pointed at appears on the LCD
and/or viewfinder, the CCD is operating properly.  If the LCD and/or
viewfinder remain black, the camcorder requires service.

Effective immediately, and regardless of warranty status, Canon will
repair, free of charge, products exhibiting the above-mentioned
malfunction if the malfunction is caused by the CCD image sensor. Canon
will also cover the cost of shipping and handling in connection with
this repair.

A pre-paid shipping label is being sent to you at the address you have
provided.  Upon receipt of this label, please follow the included
instructions to submit your camcorder to our Factory Service Center for
repair.

Once again, your satisfaction with our products is extremely important
to us. We are sorry for any inconvenience this issue has caused you.
Please be assured we are doing everything possible to ensure your
satisfaction.

We hope this information is helpful to you. Please feel free to contact
us again if you have any other questions or concerns regarding your
ZR90.

Thank you for choosing Canon.
