Probably has something to do with mail relay. I had same problem and had to
add an exception ip address to accept mail relaying from that box.

Good morning! Quick question for a Tuesday:
We switched our mail server two weeks ago, and when we went to send
out a mass e-mail, it didn't work. Our POP 3 account is
asmtp.algona.k12.ia.us; and on our local mail clients we had to mark
use authentication. So I went into the administrator settings in
JMC, and entered the POP 3 server in the SMTP settings, checked the
use authentication box, and entered my e-mail username and pw in the
appropriate boxes (which is what JMC also thought made sense). When I
went to send an e-mail to my random family . . . I got the dreaded
spinning wheel and an unknown error message that it can't send out to
me. Before I call for tech. help again, I'm just curious if anyone
else has had the same problem/knows and easy fix. Thanks, and hope
everyone has a great holiday!
-Jackie
