[info-tech] TExt recognition and screen reading

We have a couple dyslexic students here that we are looking for ways  
to leverage our technologies to read the textbooks and worksheets to  
them, ala Kurzweil 3000. Here comes the big BUT.... I don't want to  
spend $3000 on Kurzweil if I can avoid it.  What are other schools  
using to accomplish this? We are mostly OS 10.4 machines here, so no  
windows only solutions (unless they are very good and very cheap)
