Off the top of my head, I think you can safely go 3.0->3.4->3.6->3.8.

memory -- please read and follow the upgrade documentation, not what I
write here. If in any doubt, step through the latest patch version
from each major release.
Does this mean, going straight from 2.5.17 to 3.8 will not work even in
