Check that you're logging in successfully - the log files should show:

As mentioned "virtdomains: userid" is also a good option, and then add "defaultdomain: your.domain" to avoid having to specify the domain in the username.
Also, make sure that your sasl_mech_list does NOT include digest-md5.
Trying to connect with Thunderbird is a good option.
