Authetication runs via sasl so i assume is the same as for imap.
Never read that there were different authentication mechanisms for
imap and caldav.
Then check the PAM os logs anyway, as SASL can use them too, IIRC.
If you would tell me where to look for. Syslog tells nothing.

Check journalctl and maybe auth.log in /var/log or /var/log/messages.
sasld config is also relevant.
Debian doesn't use syslogd by default anymore in certain situations.
Dunno if that also applies to 11.
grep sasl /var/log/auth.log
nothing
grep sasl /var/log/messages
nothing
I still use /var/log/syslog
also nothing there
journalctl (I don't like systemd at all
