Well, I was going to stay out of this one but now feel the need to enter
my two cents worth....

The AOL vs ISP controversy will be with us for a while. Interesting.
Each fills a niche and a need. Each is self promoting. Lets look at what
they offer.

The Internet Service provide (unless local) gives an altered version of
a browser with a pre-set home page. Very often it decrees that network
neighborhood be intalled or it will not work. The average "newbie" will
simply install the software and never think twice about the startup page
or the built in options. (Mindspring/Earthlink, AT&T come to mind) Did
you know that one cannot access any ATT member functions (unless they
are listed as a business account) from a non ATT ISP save web mail?

In working with a diverse group of people that access the internet every
day, there is a need for each and every Internet access available. We
all moan and groan about Microsoft, yet I will be willing to bet that
most of our group has at least one (if not more) of the Microsoft
operating systems on their machines.

I neither condone nor discourage what a person uses since each has its
positives and negatives. I DO however show AOL users how they can
minimize AOL and use another browser. For the total "newbie", AOL is the
hand-holding help they need to get started right along with
Mindspring/Earthlink and its self-serving software and, the Microsoft
Network as well as Gateway and others. Each has its own built in
"personality".

I HAVE found that if one is a bitch/moan personality, after a while,
with AOL they will be discounted and ignored. AOL has blocking that no
other service can offer. They also have a great deal of "spam".

Bottom line: We all learn and grow. We all have our likes and dislikes.
There are positives and negatives to all that access the internet. How
many of us know that we can subscribe to a Service provider and NOT use
their software? All one needs is the network info and dial-up info along
with a browser? (Joe, that would be an interesting query)

Every service has its positives and negatives just as every operating
system does.
