If you are using Netscape Version 4.73 [en]C-CCK-MCD {TLC;RETAIL} (Win98; U
then you need to upgrade now! Version prior to 4.75 have a major security
flaw that allows someone with a malicious webpage to view the files on your
computers. This bug actually make your computer act as a webserver and
serve up all the file on your hard drive.
For this to happen all you have to do is visit a hackers website. Even
when you leave his website he can still browse your hard drive for as long
as you are on-line. The only way to stop this it is exit Netscape.
I would try this...
(at your own risk of course)
Download the latest version (not the pre release) from netscape.com's ftp site.
(1). Copy your mail folder to "My Documents" or some backup folder.
(2). Remove your current version of Netscape with Add/Remove Programs in
control panel.
(3). Delete the Netscape directory (do NOT delete c:\program files, only
the Netscape
directory or where ever you installed netscape.
Note: un installing will not delete the directory and will leave old files
on your hard drive.
(4). Install 4.75
Inbetween (3) and (4), you may also want to run scandisk and defrag.
This may be overkill, but this method seems to solve a lot of Netscape
crash problems.
Another problem that can cause Netscape and other programs to crash is
having the same multiple .dlls on your hard drive. You may need to help to
sort this out.
The final version of Netscape 6.0 will be out later this year. I do NOT
suggest you use the preview release of 6.0 at this time.
