I've been using Mozilla since Seamonkey release 14.
Release 18 is a big improvement but still has some bugs. This version has not crashed on me yet.
DISADVANTAGES
* copy and paste problems
* windowing positioning problems sometimes occur
* same problem with pages created with frontpage as Communicator 4.*
* No MSNBC ActiveX Plugin for Mozilla yet.
ADVANTAGES
* access to the latest technology today!
* stay on the cutting edge
* option to NOT install Netscape Mail or Chat (I installed Chat but not Mail)
* themes enabled, (the first thing to do is change your theme to modern)
* My Sidebar -- similar to Opera
* customize toolbar
* import or convert your current Netscape Communicator profile
* un-installer included
* security manager
* cookie manager
* encrypt private information on disk option
Slow to load with all the debug code (this is a preview release); however, Mozilla loads pages fast. I had trouble with http://www.themess.com/ (Joe, do you use frontpage?). All other major sites I visited including http://www.cnn.com rendered fine.
The final version of Mozilla is due out later this year. For those who use Netscape and can't wait you may want to try the latest Netscape Pre-Release or the Seamonkey Release (at your own risk!).
The only thing I do not like about the Mozilla open source project: They use MS Visual C++ specific source code instead of the Cygnus Cygwin C/C++ compiler. Although, they do use egcs for the Linux port. Borland C++ would be a better choice; at least Borland makes many tools and compilers available FREE for non-commercial use for the home user. I also question their decision on changing to a dual license. Netscape has probably planned ahead and instigated the whole project by influencing the developers with money thus controlling their decisions.
Result: unless you have the latest Microsoft Visual C++ then downloading the "Open Source" will do you no good, so get the binary installer. This defeats one of the purposes of Open Source -- so you (the end-user) can create your own customized version for personal use. Netscape has seen through all this and most all the developers on the Mozilla team consist of the original Netscape developers which are controlled or influenced by Netscape Communications. The reason I say this is because anyone who works for a company (on the payroll) that company has direct influence over their actions.
On the other hand, I would like to add that the Mozilla project is a success. Mozilla is as radical of a change as Communicator 4.0 was in 1996. A big improvement! The size of the binary installer for windows is less than 1/2 of Communicator 4.75, even with all the debug code.
