A note to all our junior computer enthuiasts and newbies out there:

The location and then removal of dup files can be accomplished by a variety of methods - there are several excellent tools out there to do so. A word of caution however.

Many programs are "self-contained": i.e. they incorporate many of the dlls that windows system and other programs also use but, in their own folder. Thus, program X will look for XXXX.dll inside its folder, and windows will look for that same dll in  C:\windows\system. Duplicate? yes. Unecessary? NO! Another example would be if one has the install cabinets (cab files) on the hard drive for ease of restore/replace. Since a dup remover programs looks for files by both name and "fingerprint", many dlls will be reported from the cab files. To remove from the cabs will result in your not being able to replace a corrupted file - to remove from the operating system will result in your not being able to boot.

Unless you are comfortable rooting around within  your system, or, if in doubt, do not get carried away with this type of cleanup utility.
