You can pick up a bargan at Books a Million or B&N in store. I think I
paid around $29 for MS Visual Basics Deluxe Learning Edition version 5.0
from the Microsoft Press. When a new version comes out they usually put
all old ones on sale. Regular price was $129.99 and version 6 same version
was about $179. While I was in school, I purchased the learning edition of
VB 6 pro for $199 (students only). All of these versions come with make
exe enabled so you can actually compile your programs. The academic version
is virtually the same as the retail professional edition.
The learning pack from MS Press comes with a tutorial book which you can
follow along with and a reference book, w/cdrom all wrapped together in a box.
Remember though, if you do go ahead and purchase the Full version around
$800, the MSDN library is NOT included; so, it basically has no help
files. You would have to pop another $289-$300 for the MSDN Library or
even more for a subscription and updates. The 5.0 versions work ok and has
help files. Go to the book store and look for it.
