Gee, I feel like I am at work and I just got home! :) I do email client relations for Gateway's Accessory Store area on the website. So, I know where you go to find out how to order your RAM since I direct countless people there every day. There is an area on our site called Memory Express where you plug in all your info and they tell you exactly what your system requires and can take etc. You always have a 30 day return span, btw. Here is the link to the Memory Express: http://www.necxdirect.com/cgi-bin/auth/memexp_q?nonce=guest_gate&refer=gasd1 4 I recently purchased RAM for my HP from CompUSA and got a bad chip that melted one of my slots. Looks like I am going to have to learn about mother boards so I can replace it and add that second 128 mg chip again. You just never know! This was a rarity, but it happens on those rare occasions. Now if I could be that lucky with my lottery tickets! Since there are problems with your OS now, you do not want to overwrite any of your system file as the possibility of re-installing your "problem" then becomes very real. Once you have fdisked and then formatted - installed the OS clean - installed all of the programs you use, then it is a matter of downloading and installing all the updates and patches - then, copy your personal data back into the directories (or folders as they are now called) each programs uses to look for it's info (i.e. WP looks to "My Files" for all wpds - Word looks to "My Documents" - Netscape looks to ..\...\users\(your name) etc.). If you go through the hard drive formatting and then copy all the previously used files back onto the drive, you will be right back where you started with possibly more problems - a unit looking for software that partitions the drives but that software not being there as I got the impression that was your original problem...S -- >^,,^< Sylve M. Sylve Several months ago, I reformatted a computer for my husband and someone told me I did not need to run fdisk. I knew in the past I always ran fdisk first but this time, being in a rush, I skipped that. Now my husband's computer cannot activate autorun and I am wondering if it is because it was not totally wiped clean with fdisk. NEVER AGAIN will I listen and take a shortcut. My computer guru always told me to follow the procedures and this time I didn't listen. Shall I reformat again? This occurrence only seems to appear on a few of his CD-ROM programs. In retrospect, I believe that was the main reason I wiped it .. to see if autorun would work. It does not. I was not planning on partitioning the 6.4 GB HD which runs on a verrry slow Intel Celeron 500 which I believe is misconfigured although not by me. *S* Rita ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 Nov 2000 14:59:21 -0500 From: "Sylve M. The mem is not always the cheapest on the market, but it is very close to the going price and, as I too have a gateway which requires a specific type of mem, I know that what I get will not only work, it is what the machine requires. If there is any problem, their product is backed 100%. http://www.crucial.com/ -- >^,,^< Sylve M. Davis >^,,^< ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 Nov 2000 15:23:48 -0500 From: "Sylve M. Davis" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: * informant * Sylve .. your input please? Rita, First of all, do the CD's you are having problems with have an autorun.inf file? Do they auto load on other computers? Is the CD drive a multiread unit? (that may be part of your problem there.....) A couple of things to try before going to extremes.... Click on start, settings, control panel, system. Now click the plus sign in front of your CD ROM and then right click the name of your CD ROM. Choose properties and then click on the settings tab. Is the autorun option checked? If not, check it and reboot. Hopefully that will take care of your problems. If it is checked, uncheck it, reboot, go back into control panel and recheck it. Rebott and see if that clears the problem. Sometimes when both virtual and legacy drivers are loaded, they create a conflict (I call it a hiccup). Does the unit load legacy drivers (in the autoexec.bat) instead of virtual drivers? Check on the manufacturers web site to see if there are newer 32 bit drivers for that specific drive. Another thing you might try: in the system area of the control panel, "remove" the unit. If it IS loading through the autoexec file, REM the load lines out. Now reboot and see if your OS (I am assuming it is WIN9X) will find and load the drive. It may be as simple as putting a checkmark in the autorun box, or just replacing the CD ROM drive as they are very inexpensive. (42X's are around $20 in my neck of the woods, Central Florida). You should not have to restructure a machine to invoke autorun. Let me know how you make out. -- >^,,^< Sylve M. Rita, This item was in a recent Win Insider 11-17-2000. You may have seen it!...and it may be of interest to others concerned with this at the moment Ewan. I've been looking around for a while for a Web site that takes people step-by-step through the process of repartitioning and formatting their hard drives. Weendoggy's "How to Fdisk and Format a Hard Drive" is it: http://members.aol.com/weendoggy/#fdisk I want to remind people of a few things: 1. Repartitioning a hard drive using Fdisk kills forever all the data on that drive. 2. You don't absolutely have to repartition and reformat to do a clean install of Windows. 3. Read and understand before you do. A secondary link worth noting this week is Winmag.com's new Essential Guide to Dual Booting Windows, written by Serdar Yegulalp: http://www.winmag.com/windows/guides/dualboot/ ----- Original Message ----- From: RiRi 2000 <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: 19 November 2000 18:49 Subject: * informant * Sylve .. your input please? > Sylve > > Several months ago, I reformatted a computer for my husband and someone told > me I did not need to run fdisk. > > Rita > ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 Nov 2000 16:57:54 -0500 From: Jay Daniels <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: * informant * Sylve .. your input please? You will need a bios that will boot from the cdrom or the dos iso cdrom drivers for your particular cdrom. (how can one not do so and still get a clean install with all the old files not to mention the registry still on the hard drive?) However, the problem was: (quote) .....copy of drive image, came as part of my computer package,it came loaded with win98,i already had win98 se,so i loaded it on my pc,now i can't format and reload the basic files, and start over....(end quote). In this particular instance fdisk is the only thing that will clean and restore this hard drive in prep for a new installation. It is true that it is not necessary to fdisk prior to an install, however, if the hard drive had problems, or, even if one is redoing the system from scratch, fdisk takes only a few minutes, and, guarantees a completely clean install. Why would one not take that extra step to ensure no problems down the road? It also allows the user to set up a clean primary partition for the operating system and a clean secondary for everything else. -- >^,,^< Sylve M.
