have you tried to fdisk first? I had a similar problem but was able to
format after I removed all partitions with fdisk.

I was handed another system that will not boot from the drive.
I boot with a diskette and tried to format the hard disk, but it tells me
that it is a compressed drive and I need to run DRVSPACE to format the
drive.
DRVSPACE will only run under windows, I cannot boot to windows, only from a
floppy.
How do I format this drive ???????????
