Thank you for the hint. I never thought of leaving W98 for DOS to do the
job.
the original command you listed did not seem to work, so I got in the parent
directory and ran
attrib -r /s and that did the trick.
I applied this to a directory tree with > 10,000 files in it, not all or
which had.
There now appear to be ~50 files that were not changed, but which responded
to being selected and then changed by using Properties.
Strange.
