There's a program (freeware) that lets you shut just about everything without doing
"control/alt/delete" that's called "EndItAll" I use it regularly whenever I try to set
up a program. scandisc and defrag.Here's the link and I think it's a must-have in
anyone's arsenal of doing anything on their PC.

This is a start in doing a 'good' scandisc/defrag. If this doesn't work then you
should reboot and go into safe mode. In safe mode no applications should be running,
ergo, the maintainence should go easier.(not always so but a start) Other than that
........perhaps it's been quite a while since you've done, or allowed, a
scandisc/defrag to complete. If that is the case then however long (within a modicum)
it takes, let it go. There have been some people who have taken many hours to complete
a defrag. Another perhaps, it hasn't been done in soooo long that it WILL take a
while. 80%, 10% or 15% really doesn't matter.... It's where on the hdd where, for
whatever the reason, most of the data is residing. If you're using '95, 98, 98SE
somewhere on the www is a link to the Win ME defrag.exe. I have found it's faster than
the defrag.exe on the previous versions. Ask me, I know........It used to take 1½
hours to defrag an older 6.4 Gb drive. It now only takes ½ hour for the same drive and
the best part is it takes about the same time for a 20 gig drive
Didn't mean to get a little sidetracked but I think you can get the gist of it. Don't
have anything else running and , especially, if you haven't completed the tasks in
quite a while, then, it will take a while. Be patient.

| My guess is that you have a VERY large drive. My 45GB doe sthe same thing
