Both my son-in-laws bought Dells, at a bit higher price than my custom
machine (Mom&Pop brand.)
I have workied on them and they are fine. Both have 128MB sdram, 30GB disk,
833Mh processor.
The world is moving so fast right now in terms of evolution of gear, that it
is tough to make choices. My advice FWIW is not to skimp on either processor
speed or memory. Satisfactory machines for graphics can be had for 1200 or
so. Audio I am unfamiliar with, but graphics requires power and it is out
there at an astoundingly low cost relative to 4 months ago. Get the100Mh
disk controller and 133Mh sdram.
The above is not a cutting edge recommendation, which would cost a bit more.
Oh, if you get a burner, my Plextor 12x10x32A has not produced a coaster
yet! I had Pacific Digital and Acer before, and paid the price for getting
cheap stuff!
