I happened upon, www.myrealbox.com.  I haven't had any problems, there are 
no ad taglines and I've not gotten any spam. Additionally, you can use a 
stand alone mail program like Eudora to download and read the mail rather 
than having to read mail on the web--something I detest even with a fast 
cable modem.
