Hello all, My wifes computer will not take her to the hp.com site.
Mine across the room goes just fine and I sent the page to her and she
still cannot get there. She has tried Opera, Netscape and IE to no
avail. I remember one time someone posted the page to retrieve the DNS
numbers and I thought perhaps she could get there like that. Kinda
reminds me of the farmer telling some asking for directions that he
could not get there from here, he had to go over to the next farm and
start from there.
Thanks in advance,
Bill Anderson

Is she using AOL by chance? I know that it blocks access to lots of sites,
wouldn't think it would block them though.
How about is she running any sort of web site filter program to block access
to certain sites by children?
Or what about cookies? There are sites that will not allow access in any
form without cookies enabled. Perhaps HP is one of them. This winds up the
reason my machine cannot access a lot of sites.... stinking cookies!
How about cache? Have the temp files been emptied lately? I doubt this one
would affect her ability but I'm just thinking out loud here.
Firewall.... is it set right?
That's all I can think of right off hand. Hope one of them helps.

I've been an AOL member since 1994. I had no problem accessing HP.com.
This is a persistant "fact" regarding AOL. I'd appreciate someone sending me
links to a few of the sites AOL blocks. I've heard this for years and have
yet to find a link that I could access through EarthLink and not through AOL.
I'm not attacking you personally, please don't take it as such.
I don't disagee with the many complaints of heavy-handedness with advertising
or that the install program is much to invasive on a system. I do like that
the mail is non-standard, as this means all the nasty little worms and virii
that are written to exploit outlook and outlook express are benign from my
perspective.
There are Pros and Cons to every system and service, I only wish they could
all be judged on facts.

might want to check the content on IE. Go to the internet, click on tools,
go to internet options and click on the tab content. Check to make sure the
enable button is not enabled.

I had a several page report in front of me about a year ago on stuff that
AOL was blocking. According to the report, AOL denied doing such but was
proved to be lying and last I heard was being taken to court over the issue
by someone.... forgot whom.... maybe one of the sites that they were denying
access to. I did not retain the report and do not use AOL. I do not know
the outcome of any proceedings from this issue.
Personally, I have a long list of reasons I would never allow AOL anywhere
near my computers but that's not important here. I know that a lot of
people are happy with AOL and I hear that for newcomers to the web it is
suppose to be great. I've worked on machines using AOL and I absolutely do
not like them but I NEVER condemn those who do.
I am elated to hear that you do not experience the problem I mentioned and
sorry to learn that you take offense to my mentioning that possibility. But
please remember that I did not condemn AOL, or comment on any pros or cons
about them. I made a simple statement that is, whether you want to believe
it or not, documented fact.
I was merely trying to offer suggestions to the person with a problem which
is, I believe, what this list is for, right?
I am sincerely sorry it upset you as that was never my intention. I will
pull the plug before I intentionally upset someone.
Pam

There was a time back a few years ago when AOL blocked BlueMountain
e-greeting cards from being sent to anyone on AOL. It was taken to court and Blue
Mountain won that suit. I don't recall all the details but I do recall the case.

I remember their name now that you mention it. Perhaps "it" was the court
case I recall too. There were a number of sites listed in the report I
had, seems to me about 15 well known and harmless like BlueMountain, along
with others. In all fairness being a year or so ago, AOL has come out with
one or two new versions since then and may have eliminated that "feature" of
theirs, I don't know.

Subject: RE: * informant * Hp site does not work, need help
Have come in on the tail end of this and it is not clear who is using what....
Re: unable to get to a site... Check to see if you have an active "hosts" file on your
computer. If so, (and you didn't know or don't want it) delete it.
If it is just AOL that is blocking, then minimize AOL and open up Netscape or IE then
browse to the site of choice.
