Racism? My wife being Japanese, I know its a big
problem in Japan against other Asians. Mostly do to
economic reasons and the belief that the "Japanese
race" is in some way superior.
Personally people have starred at us when we were at a
mall in Arkansas because my wife and I were holding
hands. Either it is the first time they have ever seen
an Asian or the first time they have seen an
interracial couple, who knows. Also in an airport one
time, an airport worker asked me if my wife was my
sister (I assume he thought my family rescued this
poor Asian girl from a third world country although on
average Japanese make more money than Americans.) Upon
telling this worker (who was a foreign worker) that
she was my wife he seemed almost horrified!
I think racism is cause by ignorance: a lack of world
perspective and a lack of understanding that all
humans are the same. The only difference being that we
were born in this country or in that country or to
this family or that, all factors that are out of our
control. In a secular sense we are all alone in this
universe with no-one for company but our fellow man
and in a religious sense any other person could be a
reincarnation of God.
But the thought that race is some how something to
judge people upon can be ingrained on us at a early
age and with it will come an attitude that will take
many years to heal or it is perhaps a wound that no
human can recover from, in short racism is an
infectious disease that can be passed unknowingly upon
a young child with no hope of recovery.
