Greetings, all - First off, I want to thank those who have purchased and/or written to me about my latest book, "Weapons of Mass Delusion: America's Real National Emergency." Feedback from you - and others - has been overwhelmingly positive, with some even asking if I'd move to California and run for governor (I said "thanks but no thanks.")
For those interested, I will be in Tokyo the week of 4-10 November 2003 speaking on incident response at the PacSec.JP conference (www.pacsec.jp) on 6 November. Anyone in the area who wants to link up and chat, drop me a note. This past weekend, I finished reading Bruce Schneier's latest book, "Beyond Fear" -- and highly recommend it to anyone working in "security" or thinks they're truly secure in their IT, corporate, and personal lives. Bruce is one of the few security folks who actually "gets" it and doesn't promote the FUD and Chicken-Little angle that so many in the security profession do; he's got significant real-world experience in this area, unlike many self-proclaimed "experts" with no experience and who don't know the difference between a packet and a parakeet. "Beyond Fear" is a fantastic cross-industry overview of the "science of security" that cuts through the hype and goofy claims about what form of "security" works best, even going so far to show the illusory, feel-good nature of what's being sold to the public as "security" these days (Bruce rightly calls it "security theater.") Drawing on real-world examples from post-0911 and more, Bruce's latest book will be an ideal textbook for college programs in security and may even prove useful in educating corporate executives and policymakers on the realities of implementing effective security in their enterprises, particularly since it's written in plain English and not focussed exclusively on IT. In short, it's a damn good book. I hope to get them available to you in the near future. Anyway, until next time, enjoy the fall foliage. :) -rick Infowarrior.org -- You are a subscribed member of the infowarrior list.
