It means that, for some reason, the remote side abruptly terminated the connection.  This could be a disconnection at any point including a remote server, remote firewall, local network, local firewall, etc.

What does this error really mean? "SOCKET ERROR: Remote disconnected"
All of a sudden I'm seeing a lot of these for valid emails in the Post log file.
