I have just confirmed that each of these servers is running Post 2.8.1r2.

We've been using that version for some time now and hadn't noticed this problem 
in the past.

Something I didn't point out was that in each case the Post server had been up 
and processing succesfully for quite some time before this happened. The logs 
show this as well.

I suppose at this point, I will drop this until we see it again--hopefully we 
won't.
