This error can also occur if memory is low.  I'll have more descriptive logs added to help in troubleshooting.

I just installed the beta 15, and not sure if this is new but haven't seen this on the last versions (not sure).

after sending to a non existing domain I am getting logs like this (where the mail control file can't be deleted.)

any ideas of why would this be ?

Keeping track of the hop count is a way of eliminating mail loops.  When
mail loops occur mail the same mail is sent and received over and over again
either by the same mail server (to itself) or between two separate mail
servers.  So, when the hop count gets to 20 the mail has been received by a
mail server 20 times.   If you send the error message and abort the mail
then the looping will stop.

Howie
