Hi All,
I just thought I would contribute my 2c worth to the current discussion
about Fusionmail. We are basically just starting up in the whole area of
web development and hosting. The decision to go with iMS for email
services was made on the basis of it's strong integration with CF, and
now that we have had it running for a while I find there are *heaps* of
fringe benefits too ;)
The actual installation and set up of FusionMail wasn't too much of a
problem (as I recall now), it did basically install and run straight out
of the box. Since then however I've made two reasonably significant
changes to FusionMail. The first to do with the handling of domain names
and the other to do with domain administration.
Domain Names.
We are hosting a few small domains so far and we set each of them up
with a URL like http://mail.mydomain.com.au so they have a web based
mail interface if they want to use it. What I didn't like about the
interface was that everybody had to put in the name of their domain when
they were logging on, but because they have their own interface the
domain name is already in the URL, and anyway my clients don't need to
know that they share the mail interface with everybody else. So I added
a field to the Domain table called 'PrivateDomain' and changed login.cfm
so that it extracts the domain name from the URL then checks in the
database to see if PrivateDomain is true for the domain. If it is true
then the domain name is replaced on the page as a hidden field, see
http://www.netsettlement.com.au. There may be cases where we don't set
up a private mail URL so in that case those clients will need to enter
their domain name and they will use the 'public' interface at
http://www.eaglehawk-computing.com.au. For administration I also
modified domain.cfm to include PrivateDomain.
Domain Administration.
In reality (for us) this is really 'User' administration... I didn't
really like the fact that as a 'domain administrator' you could see the
'Domain' button but not the 'Users' button on the menu bar. This meant
that a person could change the maximum mailbox and message sizes for
their domain but could not add new users to the domain. (I may have
jumped the gun on this a bit because I found in the code where the
'Users' button would appear for a domain administrator if they had any
'managed users'.) Anyway, as the system administrator I don't want
domain administrators tinkering with mailbox and message sizes, these
are things that are set as part of their contract and are not changed
unless they renegotiate the terms of their agreement. But I do want them
to look after any and all users that are part of their domain, and they
should have access to the 'Users' facility regardless of whether they
have any 'managed users' since they are the domain administrator. To
make this work I had to modify index.cfm and verifyusermanager.cfm
My problem now is that when Howie brings out the new and improved
FusionMail I'll have to cut and paste my changes into it. It will be a
small price to pay...
Regards,
Brett Payne-Rhodes
