Howdy y'all,
I've had this problem that has plagued my iMS install for some time, although lately
is has been so rare that I even thought it solved. I would really like to know if
anyone else is affected by this.
The pattern is always the same. I've seen this happen with both POP and SMTP,
although SMTP much more often. The latest one happened tonight on the SMTP module,
which I'm using as an example here.
1) iMS logs an access violation (or several):
12/28/2000 08:34:42 PM [011] WARNING: SYSTEM: Access violation at address 00401BFC in
module 'inFusionSMTP.exe'. Write of address 36676477
There's no apparent reason for the exception, thread 11 starts out as a normal connect
from a known-good host.
2) iMS will continue to operate normally for a few seconds or minutes. Then it starts
requesting CF templates using file names that contain some junk strings. The name of
the actual template being requested is tacked on to the request string, so that CF
generates a 404 error. Here are some examples of the different template names iMS
tries to use:
12/28/2000 08:34:44 PM [018] WARNING: Template=no entry for -> HTTPSRCPT.cfm
12/28/2000 08:34:45 PM [019] WARNING: Template=%3Cmailto%3AList%2Dm$ D
RCPT.cfm
12/28/2000 08:34:47 PM [001] WARNING: Template=Content-type: text/htmlHELO.cfm
12/28/2000 08:34:47 PM [010] WARNING: Template=G:\Log\iMS\CYCLESMT$ D
yahoo.com\DATA.cfm
12/28/2000 08:34:49 PM [002] WARNING: Template=HTTPS_SERVER_SUBJECT$ D
HELO.cfm
Pretty strange looking stuff.
A restart of the affected service always fixes things. There are always resources
available at the time I check the server (before restarting), but usually the affected
service is using a bunch of RAM (SMTP was using 44MB physical before the restart in
this case). However there's always plenty of physical and virtual memory still free
on the machine. I'm running NT4 SP5, CF4.51(no SP), and iMS1.5a.
So, does anyone else see this happening? Is it just me? I'm considering rebuilding
the iMS machine from scratch just to see if it's something weird with the install.
I've also considered going back to CF 4.01, but it's iMS that seems to be the apparent
cause of the errors in this case, so I'm not convinced. Like I mention, the situation
has really been improving with each iMS release, to the point where this is a rare
occurrence, but alas it still happens.
Howie, if this is iMS telling me that it's out of resources (as you have indicated in
the past), could there be a more elegant way to do that (a nice popup warning/email
message/service restart maybe :-) ?
Many thanks, and a happy new year to all.
